IDENTITY THEFT
PRIVACY IS THE NEXT IMPORTANT FACT:
Protect your identity. Many people never think about Identity Theft (is only happens to someone else or not on their computer) until it occurs.

Every keystroke and click you make is registered by Windows!

The most widely used web browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Mozilla, store all activities of your Internet surfing, including images you have viewed, URLs you have typed, web pages you have visited, and information you are interested in.

You surfed, created and deleted multiple files on your computer - are you absolutely sure these data traces and deleted files are gone? The answer is NO! Any deleted files or data, or any information you would like to conceal, can easily be recovered.

While working on a PC, you leave thousands of bytes behind that track all your actions (recorded in various system files) that you do not even know about.

Acronis Privacy Expert Suite thoroughly checks Windows system areas for evidence of user activities and completely removes and wipes these areas to assure your privacy. Unlike it's competitors, Acronis Privacy Expert Suite is equally effective in keeping Internet data and system tracks clean and secure.

Acronis Privacy Expert Suite is the only product of it's kind to completely wipe out and annihilate all data without possibility to recover through the use of 7 powerful data destruction algorithms.

Acronis Privacy Expert Suite also increases PC performance by cleaning out temporary files.

Display setting is on 16bit color and cannot be changed
The software drivers for the card are not installed or the wrong driver is installed. Install the correct driver from the manufacturer's CD or download them from the manufacturer. If you do not know what kind or brand of video card you have, then you must open the PC and physically inspect the video output device inside. This process can be a difficult task and it might be in your best interest to just replace the video card. Some video is integrated into the mainboard and some are actually cards. If it is an actual card (look for the signal cable coming from the monitor) then look at the large black CHIP on the card and find the manufacturer. In the integrated method, the CHIP will be physically on the mainboard. Sometimes it will just have a word like "Intel" or "SIS" on it. Look for the number under this for the video type. Go to the manufacturer and download the driver.

Modem does not dial out to the Internet
This can be both a hardware problem and/or a software problem. Assuming it is software related, the problem could just be some setting issues. One good source of free help is to call your Internet provider and they will frequently help you troubleshoot the problem.

Check these things:

  1. Telephony settings in Control Panel to ensure the dial type is Tone
  2. Test the modem.
    • For Windows ME or older
Go to Control Panel, Modem, then Diagnostics Tab. Click MORE info. If you get a response then it's not a software problem. (See the hardware options by clicking here). If you get an error message, the problem is likely software drivers for the modem.
    • For Windows 2000 or higher
Access Device Manager, Modem, then the Diagnostics Tab. Click on Query Modem. If it responds correctly with an information window, then the problem is likely not a software issue. (See the hardware options by clicking HERE).

Network problems
There are numerous technically advanced solutions if your network is not functioning. It is impossible to address all these issues here. Assuming it is limited to your computer only, a few things to check is the network card itself then software programming issues. It is also assumed that other computers in the network can successfully network or get on the Internet.

  • To check the card, open a DOS window
    1. At the Prompt type "ping 127.0.0.1" without the quotes. If you get a successful response the card is responding properly
    2. (1) Try pinging the DNS or Gateway address of your Internet provider. The DNS IP address can be obtained by calling the provider or by going to a working computer connected to the same network and opening a DOS window and typing "ipconfig" without quotes at the prompt. If you can get a successful ping then the Internet should be working. It would be useful to verify all your Network settings.
    3. (1) If problems persist, check the Network cable on the back of the computer, make sure it is connected - reconnect it. RESTART the computer. Make sure you see a connection light on the back of the network card.
    4. IF a router is being used to access the Internet, reset the power on it and the computer at the same time.

DSL Internet access but can not get on Internet
Restart the computer. Reset the power to the Router and computer at the same time. See networking issues above.

Connects to the Internet but can not surf web pages
Check the Network settings. Also consider the NETWORK suggestions above. Unless told to do so by your Internet provider, make sure the computer is setup for Dynamic rather than Static settings. Frequently, if the network is functioning but the Internet is not, the DNS settings could be wrong.

E-Mail Problem
Due to all the types of E-mail software out there, it is best to consult with your Internet provider for configuration advice. If you cannot get any E-mail but the Internet is working or you get an error message when checking it, then the software settings are likely wrong.
